Despite its name, Rayong Botanical Garden is much more than a botanical garden.
Spread across hundreds of hectares, this remarkable wetland is one of the largest and most important freshwater ecosystems in Eastern Thailand. Fed by streams flowing from the surrounding landscape, the area stores and filters water while supporting an extraordinary variety of plants and wildlife.
The result is a landscape unlike any traditional garden. Instead of carefully arranged flower beds, visitors discover flooded forests, winding waterways, towering trees, and a thriving ecosystem shaped by water.
It is one of the most rewarding places in Thailand’s green season, where nature can be explored at a gentle pace by foot, bicycle, or kayak.

Into the Wetland
The wetlands of Rayong Botanical Garden act as a natural reservoir, collecting water from surrounding streams and sustaining a rich mosaic of habitats throughout the year.
Among the most distinctive landscapes is the vast Melaleuca forest, dominated by the elegant White Paperbark Tree (Melaleuca cajuputi), known in Thailand as Samet Khao. Their pale trunks rise from the water, creating a scene that feels almost dreamlike. Reflections shimmer beneath the trees while sunlight filters through layers of green foliage overhead.
Because water is present throughout much of the landscape, the forest supports an abundance of life. Birds, insects, fish, amphibians, and countless smaller organisms depend on the wetland for food and shelter, making it one of the region’s most important ecological refuges.
The constant moisture also encourages an impressive variety of climbing plants, ferns, mosses, and epiphytes. Many large trees appear completely draped in greenery, giving the forest a lush and almost prehistoric appearance.

The Best Way to Explore
Visitors can experience the wetland through walking trails and cycling routes, but the most popular way to explore is by kayak.
The paddling route extends approximately 2–3 kilometers through calm waterways that wind beneath the forest canopy. The journey requires little experience and is suitable for most visitors.
Moving quietly through the water offers a unique perspective on the landscape. From a kayak, the forest feels immersive and intimate. The sounds of birds echo across the wetland, reflections dance on the surface of the water, and the remarkable forms of the White Paperbark trees appear around every bend.
Unlike many outdoor adventures that focus on reaching a destination, the experience here is about slowing down and appreciating the environment itself.
Rayong Botanical Garden reminds visitors that some of nature’s greatest treasures are not found on mountain summits or dramatic coastlines, but in the quiet beauty of a living wetland.
